Personnel records stolen from MoD

The MoD said it was treating the breach "extremely seriously"

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is investigating the theft of computer files with the records of thousands of serving and former RAF staff on.

The information was stored on computer hard drives at the Service Personnel and Veterans Agency at the RAF Innsworth site near Gloucester.

The theft of the files took place on 17 September, within a high-security area on the base.

The MoD has set up a helpline for people who have been affected.

It said it was treating the breach "extremely seriously".

900,000 personnel

A spokesman for the MoD police said: "We can confirm that an investigation is being conducted by MoD police, with the support of Gloucestershire Police into the apparent theft of three USB portable hard disk drives.

Security breaches when you are not personally responsible is bad especially when it involves a lot of people but how many people give out their personal details innocently?

I wanted to open an online bookmaker account a couple of weeks ago. They wanted to verify my age, understandably so I didn't have a problem with that so sent them a scan of my driving licence. It has my name, address and date of birth on it. Was that good enough? Oh no, a muppet called Mark from their call centre in Cyprus also wanted a scan of the front and back of my debit card by email. Yeah right, I'm really going to send that with the cvv code to some nomark called Mark so that I can spend my money with them. Told them to shove it where the sun don't shine. To add insult to injury, they searched my credit file for money laundering.

Think carefully before sending anything to anyone and always question why they want that information and whether they are asking for more than is required.
